History

ODIS, the Research Resource Centre and Database for the Study of 19th and 20th Century Intermediary Social Structures in Flanders, was set up on 1 January 2000. The project was funded by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO-Vlaanderen) under the auspices of the Max Wildiers Foundation.

ODIS is a cooperative venture between four heritage agencies:

The database was developed and put into operation in 2000-2002. ODIS has organised various research gatherings, including workshops on the concept of intermediary structures (Brussels, 15 May 2000), the storing of election results in databases (Brussels, 23 November 2001), and the specificity of the so-called new social movements (Brussels, 22 November 2002). The international symposium entitled Intermediary Structures & Democracy: a Historical Approach was held on 28 and 29 November 2003 in Leuven and Brussels.

The public catalogue of the database was presented in October 2003.

Archiefbank Vlaanderen (Flemish Register of Archives) was set up in 2004. For the development of the concept and the architecture of this register of Flemish private archival heritage, use was made of the expertise developed within the ODIS project. Since 2004 most of the ODIS data from archives and archive creators have also been available from the Archiefbank Vlaanderen.

The vzw ODIS was set up on 10 October 2006. This organisation continues the mission that the project was set up to accomplish. ODIS aims to further and support historical research into Flemish civil society.

Since 2007, ODIS annually organises a user’s day. This offers the ca. 80 collaborators of the project the opportunity to exchange views concerning the developments of this apparatus.

In 2009, the ODIS Hercules Project started.
