On 22 November 2002 an ODIS workshop was held in Conference Room
of the Lower House of the Flemish Parliament in Brussels. Historians
and social scientists came together to reflect on the assumed singularity
and unicity of so-called ‘new social movements’. They
compared their findings, drew up a state of affairs and explored
new research paths and methods.
The act of breaking through the separation between these two adjacent
disciplines had a decidedly fruitful effect. This is clear from
the resulting papers, gathered together in the present bundle. A
theoretical introduction sketching the development of the sociological
study of new social movements is followed by a number of more empirical
articles/papers. These deal respectively with the following issues:
the ‘second feminist wave’ in the women’s movement,
the intertwining of ‘new’ and ‘old’ organisational
forms in the peace movement, and the ideological and organisational
diversity of the third-world movement and the environmental movement.
The final two articles/papers are more theoretical in nature, mapping
out paths for future research. Is a postmodern form of scholarly
activity better equipped to deal with the cultural meaning of the
new social movements? Has a new sort of movement-model arisen with
the arrival of the ‘new emotional movements’ in recent
years?

In 2001, ODIS organised a workshop which reflected on the problem
of the automated processing of historical electoral data. The ODIS
project (Research Resource Centre and Database for the Study of
19th and 20th Century Intermediary Structures in Flanders) aims
to stimulate innovative scholarly research related to the history
of civil society in Flanders. ODIS is supported by four recognised
Flemish archival and documentation centres: ADVN, Amsab-ISG, KADOC-K.U.Leuven
and the Liberaal Archief and is financed by the Research Foundation
- Flanders (FWO) under the auspices of the Max Wildiersfonds.
In this workshop, historians and social scientists considered how
the development of appropriate instruments could provide new impulses
for research into elections. In the first session, a series of research
projects were presented in which election results were collected
and analysed. In the second session, the development of electoral
research was sketched out from historical, political-sociological
and geographical perspectives. In addition, a historical overview
was provided of Belgian electoral legislation and procedures, along
with a presentation of the digital storage of data on political
elections in the ODIS database.
The resulting papers were published in the Belgisch Tijdschrift
voor Filologie en Geschiedenis (BTFG). These formed the
basis for a separate publication, which became the first edition
in the new Odisea series. The following papers were included in
